Clay is a wonderful substance. Perhaps that is why Genesis says in one creation account that God made our first parent out of clay. It can be formed according to the will and skill of the maker. In its formation the four classic elements are involved: EARTH, WATER, AIR, and FIRE.
EARTH and WATER are mixed to just the right consistency for modeling. If the first try doesn't express what is in the imagination and heart, it can BE REFORMED,as many times as it takes. It can be pounded, stretched, flattened, pulled, pinched, broken and put back together, impressed by objects in its environment,as well as the maker's hands. Clay is so RESPONSIVE to the maker's hand. It is also FORGIVING when its form is satisfied with what she has made, it is time to let the air dry it completely. It is at its MOST VULNERABLE stage now and can easily break, so must be handled with care.
Then it is placed in the kiln (oven) and subjected to the FIRE! The fire causes a TRANSFORMATION that CANNOT BE REVERSED! Now the form can be DECORATED in beatiful or interesting colors and fired again. Think about it. How are you like the clay? Are you responsinding to our Maker's hands?
