The arts have always been part of Benedictine life, as chapter 57 "Of the Craftsman of the Monastery" in the Rule of Benedict clearly attests.
The work of the scribe has a long history that includes not just beautiful calligraphy, but painting and drawing and other "illuminations" as well. In our tradition, art in the environment and architecture have been fostered, especially as serving spirituality and liturgy.
St. Benedict admonishes, "let them exercise their crafts with all humility and reverence." (RB57)
