![]() Chapter Affirms Recommitment to Rural Service During the August 2000 chapter meeting, the community approved several recommendations of the Committee on Rural Commitment. As S. Penny Bingham noted, "We recognize that we are not starting anew but are recommitting ourselves in fresh ways to a rural way of living that we value and affirm as the prairie people that we are." The recommendations include: 1) reviewing food purchasing both at the monastery and on our missions and developing a plan to include local purchasing as much as possible; 2) continuing to pray for farmers and for rural concerns as a regular part of prayer and Eucharist; and 3) en- couraging sisters' presence in our more rural parishes and communities. The Rural Life and Outreach Committees will suggest specific scenarios for the monastery to enhance its rural presence. Sister Penny also urged that we continue to recycle, garden and support farmers through prayer. "We recognize," she said, "that all of our ministry-healthcare, education, parish and diocesan work-is in service to the people of this rural area." During the year the community will develop a policy to guide land use decisions. Chapter Affirms Prayer Support for Farmers and Rural Concerns If you are involved in agriculture at this challenging time, we want you to know that you are not alone. Our prayer supports you. We Sisters of Sacred Heart Monastery in Yankton pray specifically for farming families and for rural concerns--every Wednesday and regularly in our Liturgy of the Hours and Eucharistic celebrations. We pray because we care; we stand with you.
