The Many Facets of
Ministry We
are often asked what do the sisters do now that they are not present in large
numbers in schools and hospitals? So we have listed for you, in
Ministries Commissions for
2004-2005 link, the
ministry of each sister of Sacred Heart Monastery. We touch many lives in many
ways even though our median age is 72 years. Ministry is an integral part of
our lives right up to the end when we are still faithfully praying for those who
ask for our prayers. Benedict’s motto is a daily reminder to us to “work and
pray.”Among our ministries we do not currently have any foreign missions but through the encouragement of AIM (Alliance for International Monasticism) we have initiated some programs to help our Benedictine sisters and brothers in other lands. We are presently hosting and giving financial assistance to three sisters who are attending Mount Marty College. S. Marie Johann is a religious edu- edustudies major from Seoul, Korea; Sister Inviolata is a psychology major from Pusan, Korea; and Sister Gloriosa is a nursing major from Tanzania. Their presence here at the monastery enriches our lives and they will be precious resources for their communities upon their return home. Through AIM a couple of our sisters have gone to Africa to give presentations. In 2000 Sister Jeanne Ranek went to Kenya to be a presenter on aspects of monasticism to a group of Benedictine women leaders. In 2002 Sister Rosemary Weber went to Tanzania to assist in teaching English to young religious who are preparing for additional education. In addition, once a year we send a monetary contribution to AIM to help third world monasteries with special needs. We invite our Oblates to join us in this Lenten alms program for AIM. Ministering here in this region and working with others like AIM, we keep the tradition of our founder, St. Benedict. We live in community, pray as Benedict directs in the Rule, and minister to others in a variety of ways. This is our call.
